Facial Fat Transfer
A youthful face is one that is smooth, voluminous, and free of lines and wrinkles. With age, much of the fat tissues beneath the surface of the skin begin to break down, causing depressions, indentations and hollowed areas on the face. A facial fat transfer uses a patient’s own fat stores to fill in these areas, restoring fullness to sunken skin. Largo facial fat transfers can be used to:
- Reduce under-eye bags and dark circles
- Fill in hollowed eyes, cheeks and temples
- Contour the nose and jaw line
- Add volume to the lips
- Minimize the appearance of smile lines, worry lines and crow’s feet
Facial fat transfers are also a good alternative to dermal fillers in patients who require greater volumes of filler to fill in large, sunken areas.
Facial fat transfers in Largo are performed on an outpatient basis under local anesthesia. First, fat is harvested from a donor area on the patient’s body – usually the thighs or lower abdomen. The fat is then purified in a centrifuge and re-injected into the recipient site. The amount of fat injected will vary according to the area being treated and the extent of volume loss. Finally, surgical tape will be applied to the treatment area, and the patient is allowed to go home. In most cases, facial fat transfers are performed very quickly and painlessly – usually in two hours or less.
Recovery and Results
It is normal to experience some swelling and discomfort once you return home from treatment. We encourage patients to rest the treatment site and avoid applying pressure to the area for a few weeks so that blood vessels can grow into the grafted fat and strengthen. During this time, it is important to sleep on your back and avoid rubbing your face. Be sure to attend all follow-up visits and wait to exercise or return to work until after you have been released to do so.
The final results of a facial fat transfer begin to appear within a few weeks once the swelling has subsided. Most patients notice more volume, better contouring and a softer, more youthful appearance. While many areas of the face require only one treatment to achieve desired results, additional fat transfers may be necessary for some patients who prefer greater volume.
All surgical procedures carry some risks of complications, including those which are micro-invasive, such as a facial fat transfer. It is possible to experience some swelling after this procedure, as well as more rare side effects like asymmetry, irregular contours, and fat or skin necrosis. However, it is important to keep in mind that forms of fat grafting have been performed by surgeons for more than a century, but it was not until the past 20 years that the procedure dramatically improved and evolved into the safe and highly effective cosmetic treatment that it is today.
